These intricate and detailed art quilts are made by using the foundation paper piecing method.

For the Happy Now series, I photographed scale-model shipping containers, and projected the image onto a large piece of paper hung on the wall. Every detail is precisely drawn on the paper, becoming the quilt’s pattern. Each color in the image is a small piece of fabric sewn by machine to the adjoining different colored textiles, piece by piece, until everything comes together. Then the quilt is sandwiched over batting and backing, and stitching can begin to emphasize line and movement through quilting. I use either a standard sewing machine or a long-arm quilter to draw the stitched lines with thread.
