With this series of art quilts, I am embracing the word SLUT, turning it around from a tool of shame to a statement of joy and enthusiasm.
I’m a slut for chocolate. I’m a slut for art. A slut for pleasure. A slut for endorphins.
The word ‘slut’ has been used for centuries as a weapon of shame and enforcer of hierarchies to disempower people who are deemed deviant from the norm. Shame operates as a tool of power and control that destroys empathy, understanding, and acceptance. Additionally, ageism, an outdated result of the patriarchy, can no longer control me. At 64 years of age, I’ve decided it’s time to be a slut.
Let’s reclaim the word ‘slut’ as a symbol of empowerment and freedom. Being a ‘slut’ means embracing our sexuality, expressing our desires, and asserting our autonomy over our bodies. We celebrate all people who confidently own their sexuality, defy societal expectations, and challenge harmful stereotypes.
Let’s stand together and proudly declare that being a ‘slut’ is a beautiful and empowering expression of our true selves in pleasure.
